What is TDS?
TDS stands for Tax Deducted at Source. It is a mechanism where the person making payment deducts tax at source and deposits it with the government on behalf of the payee.
Who is responsible for deducting TDS?
Any person making specified payments (like salary, interest, rent, professional fees, etc.) is responsible for deducting TDS if the payment exceeds the threshold limit.
What happens if PAN is not provided?
If PAN is not provided, TDS will be deducted at higher rate (20% or applicable rate, whichever is higher) as per Section 206AA of the Income Tax Act.
What is the threshold limit for TDS?
Threshold limits vary by payment type. For example, interest on securities has a threshold of ₹10,000, while rent has a threshold of ₹2,40,000 per year.
When should TDS be deducted?
TDS should be deducted at the time of payment or credit, whichever is earlier. The deducted TDS must be deposited with the government within the due dates.
What is Form 16A?
Form 16A is a certificate issued by the deductor showing the TDS deducted and deposited. It is issued quarterly and can be downloaded from the Income Tax Department website.
Can TDS be refunded?
Yes, if the TDS deducted is more than your actual tax liability, you can claim a refund while filing your income tax return.
Is this calculator free to use?
Yes, the TDS calculator is completely free to use. There are no registration requirements or usage limits.
